The STEM DRC Initiative was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2018 with a primary goal of promoting STEM education in the DR Congo as a means to solve social, humanitarian, and economic challenges.

Education: Providing STEM Scholarships
- By awarding STEM Scholarships and providing students with mentoring from working STEM professionals, the program graduates can help their country solve many social, economic, or humanitarian problems.
Research: Constructing Centers of Excellence
- Centers of excellence are being constructed to provide laboratory space and equipment.
- Students and graduates will be able to gain valuable experience, advancing their ability to do important work.
Entrepreneurship: Mentoring and Support
- Additional entrepreneurial support is provided in conjunction with the IEEE Smart Village program.
- Graduates will be supported in launching micro-enterprises to create jobs and improve infrastructure.

Expected Outcomes:
- Some graduates will be able to provide electricity and clean water to cities or villages that do not have these.
- Other graduates will be able to improve quality of life by solving poor access to healthcare.
- Still others will be able to solve hunger and nutritional problems by modernizing agricultural and livestock management practices.
